What’s the First Step?

In chapter sixty-four of Lao Tzu’s Tao Te Ching, there’s a well known verse which discusses how a long journey begins with just one step.

I think the journey referenced in that passage is considered worthwhile and significant. It’s a much anticipated expedition, and it is in line with the traveler’s values and long-term goals.

The person taking this journey has done his or her best to foresee any possible detours and bumps in the road before embarking.

Even with all this pre-planning and anticipation, however, notice the message that the actual beginning of the journey requires a simple, physical action.

Not talking, not thinking, but decisive action.

See how the author is trying to convey that we should not be overwhelmed by the appearance of an immense project?Simply begin.  Even if you don’t know where to go right away.

We will grow in understanding and wisdom through accumulated progress and learned perseverance.  Our momentum will increase, we’ll learn the proper pacing and timing to the life of travel on the path, the do’s and don’ts of the road, and we’ll eventually reach our destination better, faster, and stronger than we were before.

In a sense, we’ll be hardened and battle-tested, and if we approach circumstances with the right mindset, we won’t  be worse for wear.  We’ll be masters of the road, and of life.

Building a new business is like that.  So is succeeding in the corporate world, starting a new relationship, designing a life, and deciding where to invest your hard-earned money.

Studying topics like wisdom and strategy is like that.  So is this blog.

It’s important to clarify that I’m a beginner when it comes to the study of wisdom and strategy.  I’ve studied both of these things a fair amount over the last few years, but I’m not even close to being a teacher or authority on these topics.

I’ve a traveler, just like you – Lets travel, engage, and learn together

When I started my journey years ago, blogging wasn’t a thing.  Also, it was difficult to find people really interested in discussing things like the Lao Tzu’s Tao Te Ching, Sun Tzu’s Art of War, or similar texts

It’s become clear to me that hearty discussion helps tremendously in accelerating the  learning process.  As more people become involved it also helps share the wealth of those new discoveries  This creates a greater opportunity to apply those lessons in helping others.

That’s what we’ll be doing with this blog.

Let’s develop a learning community where we can discuss these ancient wisdom principles, and traditional and contemporary strategy, and find ways to apply them to life.

What are some of the specific things we’ll be doing with this blog?

The first, most important goal here is that of helping our readers

Now, since this blog is brand-new, we’re still working at defining what exactly that goal will entail.  It will take some time and deep engagement to refine this purpose accurately.

That said, here is a general outline of what we’ll be doing:

  • Presenting ideas from a variety of texts on wisdom and strategy
  • Looking at unique and innovative ways that these ideas and principles can be applied to daily life.
  • Developing original products related to the subject matter.
  • Reviewing books, online classes and programs, and other media relating to these topics that may prove helpful
  • Reviewing other products that have to do with the idea of lifestyle design, style, fashion, success, and general excellence and well-being.  These will be things that I’ve tried myself.  If they are things that I’ve found to be helpful, I’ll recommend them.  If I don’t find the products to be helpful, I won’t.
  • Developing a robust list of recommended products and services which can prove helpful
  • Engaging in stimulating, value added conversations with the goal of the improvement of general well-being and mutual growth
  • Delve deeply into strategy and wisdom principles.  These more rigorous projects will be likely done via white papers or PDF e-books rather then the weekly posts.

What are some things that you would like to see with this blog?  How can we help you?
